Frequently Asked Questions

Do Freshmen live together?

New this academic year, all freshmen students will live together based on their major or area of academic interest.

How do I fulfill my FYE?

The four types of FYE are:

LIFE (Learning Integrated Freshman Experience) is an academic living-learning experience for first-year college students. Most LIFE students live in the same residence hall and form learning communities organized around an academic course and UNIV 101. UNIV 101 students engage in thematically related activities outside of the classroom and develop a collaborative project. The LIFE cluster and learning community are under the leadership of an advanced undergraduate peer mentor and a LIFE mentor. The cluster involves study groups, discussion groups, tutoring, service learning projects, field trips, lectures, and social activities.

FYS is First Year Seminar and refers to courses offered by departments which are discipline specific for incoming majors to introduce students to the expectations of an academic major or career. This is different than introduction courses (3-4 credits) in the major. Air Force ROTC, Army ROTC, Athletics, and University Studies also offer seminars.

Honors courses typically involve more work with primary documents and encourage more seminar-like discussion. The one course unique to the program, which is required of all first-year students, is the interdisciplinary Honors Colloquium, a broad interdisciplinary exposure to intellectual and cultural issues.

Pathways courses are thematic, integrative courses for first-year students designed to introduce students to the academic resources of the university and to teach basic intellectual skills required for a successful undergraduate experience.

If I am in LIFE and my friend has an FYS, can we still live together?

Students who have the same major or area of academic interest will live together in the same residence hall and/or floor. This positive living arrangement provides a great opportunity for students to more easily make friends within their major or academic interest and helps with a successful transition from high school to college.

What if I want to do both Honors and LIFE?

Because each of these programs fulfill the FYE requirement, the student may only participate in one. All students who enter the university in the Honors program will participate in Honors housing and the Honors Colloquium to fulfill their FYE requirement.

What if I will be receiving AP, IB or other college credit for my FYE course?

If you are receiving credit for a course in a LIFE cluster, look up your major to see your other options for your LIFE clusters. (See next question also.)

I will not know until July if I am receiving AP credit for my FYE course. What should I do?

If you do not have your scores yet, you will be registered for your FYE. Then, you may change your FYE course at Delaworld if at that time you have learned you will be receiving AP credit for your FYE course.

What does it mean when it says LIFE cluster w/ an academic course?

Some LIFE clusters consist of one academic course and UNIV 101. These courses typically fulfill college requirements and are often taken by incoming first-year students. The courses highlight an array of interests so that students may explore different majors and fulfill college requirements.
